During their first year, students learn about laboratory safety and equipment, the scientific method, careers in medicine and the development of medical devices through “Science Safety, Careers & Bioengineering H.” During the careers unit, medical professionals share their experiences with the freshman class through our guest speaker series. Overall, this focus class provides the students with an essential foundation that promotes success throughout the duration of the program.
During their second year, students apply their understanding of the steps of the scientific method to designing and carrying out their own original series of experiments through “Experimental Design & Epidemiology H.” Students showcase their projects through the annual Biomedicine Academy Science Fair by developing a poster presentation and scientific manuscript. During the final unit of the course, students investigate past, current, and future epidemics that impact societies including the current Ebola crisis.
During their third year, students gain expertise in medicine by breaking thousands of medical terms apart into their word components in order to comprehend their meanings through “Medical Terminology H.”
During their final year, students learn about the properties of drugs and drug development, as well as the controversies surrounding medicine and science through “Pharmacology & Law & Medical Ethics H.” Students gain hands-on experience through a series of labs and build upon their communication skills by participating in oral presentations and debates.
