Arts Education

Background Information

Arts Horizons was founded in 1978 in response to the dearth in state and federal funding for arts and cultural programs in public schools. Founder and executive director John Devol, a renowned Broadway musician, had come together with a few of his friends and they devoted their time and efforts in bringing arts back into the schools. Arts Horizons began with a solitary program at one school. This non-profit organization has grown to become the largest professional organization in the New York tri-state area dedicated entirely to arts-in-education.

Summary of Internship

Interning with Arts Horizons was very beneficial to me because of the wide exposure that I was given throughout the organization. My involvement in the community based projects enabled me to associate with all types of people, and Arts Horizons has provided me the fundamentals of business interaction. By associating with people who have a sole focus on promoting the arts has made me more aware of the importance of maintaining the arts in schools. In addition, I learned the importance of precision in clerical duties, especially in the funding and accounting departments, which are full of tedious, but necessary procedures.
