Background Information

The ACLU is a non-profit organization which job is to ensure individual rights. It was founded in 1920 by Roger Baldwin. Nowadays the ACLU has over 500,000 members. It has become “The Nation’s guardian of Liberty” by going to court and making people aware of their rights. The ACLU of New Jersey implements legal, legislative and public education programs to assure that our citizens’ civil rights are not violated. One of the many cases the ACLU has defended in the Supreme Court is Tinker v. Des Moines which declared unconstitutional the suspension of public school students protesting against the Vietnam War by wearing black armbands.

Summary of Internship

At the ACLU-NJ it is very easy to perform any tasks if you can follow directions. Tasks start from sending letters, picking up the mail, adding information into the database, stuffing envelopes, answering the phone, taking checks to the bank, citing briefs and research. Basically I do a little bit of everything. The most important task that I ever got while in the internship was the Social Security project that lasted for about 2 months. The ACLU-NJ is a great experience which not only teaches you about our constitution, but also how to behave in the workplace. In addition, the ACLU-NJ has a great team that makes the experience even better.
