Background Information

Englewood Hospital was incorporated in 1888 as a non-profit, non-sectarian voluntary health care facility devoted to "the care, maintenance and cure of the sick, the injured and the infirm." It officially opened its doors on June 14, 1890 in a 12 bed wooden building on a three acre tract of land on Engle Street. Now in its second century of service, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center has evolved into a major medical and academic institution, providing "world class medicine in a community setting." Providing primary, secondary and tertiary care, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is an acute care, community teaching hospital. At Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, we are proud of our reputation as a leader in providing high quality healthcare, using state-of-the-art technology, and providing innovative programs and services.

Summary of Internship

While interning in the Englewood Hospital Pharmacy Department I learned about the different functions of a hospital pharmacy and the process that helps it run smoothly. I started by learning the role of a pharmacy technician and then continued to learn the duties of a pharmacist. After showing them that I can be trusted, the pharmacists actually allowed me to do hands on tasks under their supervision. I observed that pharmacists must verify drugs that a doctor prescribes to make sure that the patient would not have an adverse reaction to the drug. Interning in the Englewood Hospital Pharmacy Department has been an enjoyable experience because not only has it greatly increased my knowledge and interest in pharmacy, it has also put me a step ahead of other high school students who apply for pharmacy school with no such experience.
