Company/Organization: The County Seat
Topic of Internship
The County Seat is a family-operated newspaper run by the Zisa family. Lauren Zisa is the Editor-in-Chief and her mother Gail Zisa is the Publisher. The staff includes graphic artists, advertising salesmen, writers, and copy editors. Most writers work part time or from home, so the office normally contains a few people at a time. The County Seat enjoys a circulation of about 160,000 and is sent to Hackensack, South Hackensack, Maywood, Rochelle Park, Teterboro, Paramus, and Teaneck. The aim of the paper is to celebrate the good news of the community.
Summary of Internship
Personally, I worked as a staff writer and intern to Lauren Zisa. Nonetheless, everyone in the office pitched in to teach me everyday. Gail Zisa often drove me to interviews and helped me with questions and our Copy Editor, Melody Travisano, provided constructive criticism of my articles and guidelines on the Associated Press (AP) style. Lauren explained what I would be writing about or drove me to interviews as well. From this internship, I learned the process of writing an article for a newspaper and the stylistic guidelines. I also learned office protocol and became much better at conducting interviews with others for my articles.
