Company/Organization: United Nations Radio
Topic of Internship
The United Nations was founded in 1945 after the destruction and disunity that was evident in World War II. It serves as a global forum to facilitate cooperation among countries on numerous issues that are affecting the world today. Since its establishment, the United Nations has aimed to maintain international peace and security, promote the protection of human rights, administer peace keeping and peace building operations, improve social and economic standards, regulate global trade, promote the criticalness of environmental stewardship, fight against disease, and many more. The Department of Public Information launched in 1946, United Nations Radio, the international broadcasting service of the United Nations, or much simply, the voice of the UN. This organization was a hallmark campaign to promote the universal ideals of the United Nations to the global audience. UN Radio produces fifteen minute news programs in eight languages: English, French, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, and Swahili.
Summary of Internship
As an intern at United Nations Radio, I feel that this experience has been the ideal way to expose me to two topics that I have taken great interest in: international relations and communications. While watching the actual process of the live radio production, which includes the recording, editing, and processing of all the news broadcasts, I learned the basic aspects of editing audio files from the essential radio software programs. I also spend a great amount of time acting as speech transcriber. Other responsibilities include proofreading, editing, and gathering research for radio show. Personally, for me what I enjoy the most from UN Radio is attending and listening in on the conferences and assembly meetings that feature the representatives from different nations. After each conference, I am given the assignment to write a news feature concerning the topic. I have gotten the chance to go to the studio and record my voice acting as the narrator. Through this entire process of the radio broadcasts, the daily news shows, and the various UN conferences, I am able to learn more about the arising concerns of the international community.
