Political Science and Government

Background Information

Our district is now represented by two offices, one in Englewood and the Senator’s office in Teaneck. Assemblyman Gordon Johnson and Assemblywoman Valerie Huttle are located in the Englewood Office, while Sen. Loretta Weinberg carries her business in her Teaneck Office. District 37 is composed of twelve towns which include: Bergenfield, Bogota, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Hackensack, Leonia, Maywood, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, Rochelle Park, Teaneck, and Tenafly. These three political figures work together with their staff to try to fight for the needs and wants of the people in their communities, simple people like you and me. They are in essence, our voice in government. Through dedication to their people, they have managed to get re-elected for another term in office.

Summary of Internship

It is amazing to know that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Who would have thought that regular citizens could come together in order to make differences in their communities? This is exactly what Sen. Weinberg, Assemblyman Johnson, and Assemblywoman Huttle did. As is often advertised by their websites, they are real democrats who want to make real changes. With this mindset, these three determined individuals eventually made up what is now the District 37 Legislative Office. Sen. Weinberg has managed to accomplish a lot during her time in office. For instance, she has been a huge proponent for issues affecting women, children, families, health care, gun safety, and other quality-of-life concerns. With her colleagues, she has managed to stop drunk drivers and handgun violence from claiming any more innocent victims through the passage of some laws. My role in these grandiose ideas is much less complicated. Tasks for interns include answering calls, filing, responding to constituent concerns regarding certain bills, data entry for mass mailings, and many other essential tasks. You may also be invited to attend events in Trenton. For instance, I was able to attend the 213th swearing in ceremony in Trenton as well as witness Governor Corzine’s state of the state address. If you are interested in learning about the ins and outs of your local government, this is the place for you. The people here are approachable and are open to answer your questions and concerns.
