The University Hospital initially opened on September 4th, 1882 with 25 beds and was incorporated on February 23, 1883. In 1884 the hospital was moved to the former insane asylum building on Fairmont Avenue. In 1981, university-status was legislatively awarded to the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the name of the hospital was officially changed to University Hospital. Currently, the University Hospital also has a neurosurgical intensive care unit and a special Brain Tumor Program, and the Neurological Institute of New Jersey, a federally designated spinal cord injury program.
Summary of Internship
My internship took place in the department of Neurosurgery in the University Hospital. Under the guidance of Dr. Charles J. Prestigiacomo, I observed a variety of surgical procedures. These include aneurysm clippings and angiogram procedures. Dr. Prestigiacomo is a leading neurosurgeon in Cerebrovascular and Endovascular surgery and is world renowned for his success in areas such as intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations of the brain and spinal cord, and hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes. My exposure of the course of the year consisted of learning neuroanatomy and neurophysiology through various lectures and teaching sessions. I was also given a research assignment on Residual Cerebral Aneurysms and Detection Imaging. On some weeks, we go through different parts of the hospital such as the Neurological ICU, and the Angiogram procedure room. The plethora of knowledge that I received from Dr. Prestigiacomo was more beneficial than any class I have enrolled in.
