Background Information

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development network, the largest multilateral source of development assistance in the world. This organization is headquartered in New York City, and is founded entirely by voluntary contributions from donor countries. UNDP is currently on ground with 166 countries, working with them on solutions for global and national development challenges. Additionally, the UNDP works internationally to help countries to create alliances for change to support the goals at global, regional and national levels and to achieve their Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).

Summary of Internship

There are five practice areas in which the UNDP tries to cover: Democratic governance, Poverty reduction, Crisis prevention and recovery, Environment and Energy and HIV/AIDS. This internship covers one unit of UNDP, in particular, the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation (SU/SCC) or SU/SCC which was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1978. Its primary mandate is to promote, coordinate and support South-South and triangular cooperation on a Global and United Nations system-wide basis. As an intern, my main responsibility is to coordinate the 5th Annual celebration of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation. It is my duty to invite and coordinate with all the Missions to the United Nations to this event along with students at specific universities, and to gather student volunteers to assist in organizing the event. Following UN Day, it is my task to compose and complete research paper on Human Development and its relevance to the United Nations Development Programme and South-South Cooperation.
