Company/Organization: New York State Division of Human Rights Information Technology Departmnet
Topic of Internship
Information Technology Department
New York has the proud distinction of being the first state in the nation to enact a Human Rights Law, which affords every citizen “an equal opportunity to enjoy a full and productive life.” This law prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, credit, places of public accommodations, and non-sectarian educational institutions, based on age, race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, military status, and other specified classes. The New York State Division of Human Rights was created to enforce this important law. The mission of the agency is to ensure that "every individual . . . has an equal opportunity to participate fully in the economic, cultural and intellectual life of the State."
Summary of Internship
The IT Department of the NYSDHR is a core component of the organization, allowing its employees to perform the tasks they need to in order to make the state a place of equality. By aiding the lawyers and other workers within the Human Rights Division, the IT Department makes all of the work possible.
The tasks within the division are mainly focused on working with computers and networking. This may involve cloning computers to be distributed to other departments, setting up new computers for workers, downloading drivers and software, installing print servers, and accessing email servers. The main purpose behind the internship is to learn, and that aspect is never forgotten, so rarely will menial tasks be assigned. Instead, the focus lies on understanding new facets of technology and the importance behind having an IT department.
