Background Information

The American Red Cross is guided by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement—the world’s largest humanitarian network, with more than 97 million volunteers. It is an independent, volunteer-led organization, financially supported by voluntary public contributions. One of its most remembered founders is Clara Barton, who helped fund the first American Red Cross on May 21, 1881 in Washington D.C,. The purposes of the organization include giving relief to and providing communication between members of the American armed forces and their families as well as providing relief and support during national and international disaster, humanitarian crises, and health emergencies. The Red Cross also provides civil defense, CPR/AED training, and HIV/AIDS education. Another large role the Red Cross plays is its civilian blood program that supplies nearly 50 percent of the blood and blood products in this country. The Movement is guided by seven Fundamental Principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality without discrimination.

Summary of Internship

Working at the Red Cross in Ridgewood is a welcoming job for those who are able to take direction as well as perform independently when asked to. Throughout the year I helped input volunteer data into the volunteer roster, helped pick up phone calls and provided requested information, sent mail, and aided in any other task needed in the office. I even participated in the Northern New Jersey Red Cross Youth Council, helping to plan our first annul Walk-a-thon fundraiser to raise money for Disaster Relief funds titled, “Walk Faster, Relieve Disaster”. This was a great opportunity to be involved outside the office on Sundays but still be a part of the Red Cross community. There are many opportunities such as taking first aid/CPR classes, fundraising for various causes, and volunteering at the many events the Red Cross takes part in. An internship at the American Red Cross is a great experience for those who enjoy working with dedicated individuals who love to help others and give back to the community.
