Topic of Internship

Law Enforcement (Community Outreach)

Background Information

The Sheriff’s Office is composed of different Divisions and Units. Each division or unit is in charge of a certain area in Law Enforcement. The Community Outreach Unit says it all in its name; reaching out for the community when needed. Some things that this unit deals with are helping those less fortunate than others throughout the year, especially during the holidays. One good example is during Christmas, when the Community Outreach Unit reaches out for those families who are going through economic crisis. The Community Outreach Unit buys presents for the children of these families based on calls made to the parents on their children’s wish-list. The Community Outreach Unit deals with other cases that would affect the community in any way.

Summary of Internship

My internship was within the Community Outreach inside the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office. My role as an intern consisted of making phone calls and filing paperwork. While being an intern in this department, you learned the problems a community usually faces and what is being done to deal with it. Problems can consist of rise in gang activity in a neighborhood to visiting different locations around the county and talking about topics such as senior safety, online safety, etc.
