Background Information

The JCC Therapeutic Nursery deals with preschool children with developmental issues. The nurseryís model was created at the Einstein College of Medicine by Dr. Doris Allen and Lois Mendelson in 1978. The children in the program receive different types of therapy such as speech and occupational therapy. Social skills are an important part of the curriculum.

Summary of Internship

Interning at the JCC Therapeutic Nursery is not an average experience. I interact with the children and their parents, trying to create a social bond. Not only do I look after the children, but I also assist the teachers in any way possible whether it is cleaning up the toys or setting up for snack time. Because it is a nursery, the children have scheduled blocks of time where an activity is assigned. I observe the teachers and their methods of teaching. Through my experience, I have been able to witness growth in the studentsí social skills. Itís amazing to see how different the children behave in such a short amount of time. Later in life, these children will hopefully be able to attend a normal school, and so Iím proud to be a part of a life-changing program.
