Topic of Internship
In 1888 Englewood Hospital was incorporated as a non-profit, non-sectarian voluntary health care facility to take care and cure the sick and injured. The three-acre land with twelve wooden bed building opened its doors on June 14, 1890 right on Engle Street. Throughout the years the hospital has been extended to be larger. Englewood Hospital was the first New Jersey affiliate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine and is a member of the Mount Sinai Health System. Due to this affiliation with The Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Englewood Hospital and Medical Center has become a center of education and research, therefore, residents in surgery, pediatrics, podiatry, pathology, and critical care medicine fellows, rotate throughout the hospital.
Summary of Internship
My internship assignment is in the Courtesy Department, and therefore my duties are similar to that of a volunteer worker. Due to the Swine Flu epidemic people under the age of eighteen were restricted from areas of the hospital. As such, I was restricted from being interning in the nursing area of the pediatric unit. My job in the Courtesy Department is to take medical charts to the medical records office, deliver specimen to the labs, transport patients to their destinations, discharge patients, and however else I can be helpful in the hospital. In courtesy there’s a dispatcher who answers the phone and write down what each person has to do. Since courtesy is one of the busiest departments, the errands have to be done as soon as possible. In this internship I have the opportunity to learn where the different areas in the hospital are.
