Company/Organization: The Garage Theatre Group
Mentor(s):Michael Bias, Marilyn Cervino
Topic of Internship
The Garage Theatre Group is the only professional theatre company in Bergen County. This organization believes in the power of theatre as a tool for growth, understanding, and communication. Our aim is to use the process of theatre, as well as the product, to educate, inform, and connect the community in which we live. The shows that comprise The Garage theatre Group season are challenging as well as entertaining, reflecting our belief that theatre is an open dialogue between the playwright, the performer, and the audience. At the conclusion of each Main Stage performance, a discussion with the cast, director, and audience is held. By doing so, we hope to inspire and create a new generation of artists, theatre goers, and patrons.
Summary of Internship
While interning at the Garage Theatre Group, I sort through newspaper articles, headshots, and generally organize the office a bit more. Some of the more interactive things I have been invited to do are answering the phone and go out to Staples to copy certain things my mentor would like to copy. In this internship, I have learned a great deal about the types of things my mentor does to keep his company afloat. I have realized many things about my acting mentor and the choreographer that regularly works with us. I have realized that it pays to be well organized and be smart about handling office work because although both people in the office trained to be performing artists, a great part of what they do now as teachers and managers of a theatre company is office work. Although what I mostly do is organizing, I do learn a great deal about the field I will be going into and also learn a lot about how an idea to start a theatre company was realized into a real-life dream.
