Background Information

The Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation was founded over 60 years ago by Henry H. Kessler who succeeded in “creating a program to treat the whole individual, one that would help him or her successfully regain physical, mental, and social usefulness.” Unlike any other rehabilitation center, Kessler incorporates both technology and treatment to fully optimize health, function, and quality of life for its patients. The Kessler staff advocates education and research to provide clinically effective and unique rehab to address all needs that patients may have, whether they may be physical disabilities of functional limitations.

Summary of Internship

In the beginning, anxious and unaware, I did not know what to expect. Over time I have been acclimated to this dynamic rehabilitation environment. In the morning, a therapist trains and teaches me about various treatments which patients may receive. In the afternoon, a wheelchair therapy technician educates me on various equipment therapists’ use. This includes distinguishing a plethora of equipment to using the Wii fit for balance. At first I was nervous and unprepared, but through determination I was able to enjoy every second of it, the only down side to internship, however just like a roller coaster, is that it has to end. My time at internship has been fun filled and engaging. I wholeheartedly dove into this internship curiously instigating everything about the field of therapy. In just a few months, I have joined an amazing therapy family and progressed from not knowing much about therapy to acquiring a working knowledge in the three fields it associates with- Physical, Occupational, and Speech.
