Summary of Internship

At the New York Smile Institute I am given the chance to learn by a “hands on experience”. The New York Smile Institute is in the dentistry field and provides me with multiple one on one relationships with dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants. I have learned the keys to handling a successful business and working with both patients and insurance companies. I have learned how to answer the phone and handle situations quickly and efficiently. The significance of being an intern at New York Smile Institute is that not only do they provide patients with the basic dental necessities, but they provide procedures like bonding, bridges, crowns, implants, porcelain veneers, and teeth whitening. All of these things are more current procedures, but will be a necessity for all dentists to know about in years to come. Even though I have chosen to not head in the direction of the dentistry field, I am intrigued by the art of being a dentist. I observe the dentists often, but also speak with patients, answer phones, schedule appointments, talk to insurance companies, fax important material, organize the file room, and help coordinate employee birthday celebrations. One major fact I have learned by my internship is, being a dentist is not just to inflict pain upon their patient. To make sure that the patient is in good health and they are comfortable with their smile.
