Company/Organization: Palisades Medical Center
Topic of Internship
Pediatric Physical Therapy
The Pediatric Rehabilitation Program at the Palisades Medical Center was renovated and expanded immediately prior to my commencing my internship, which made it even more exciting. The program supports the needs of pediatric patients with various diagnosis, inluding developmental delay, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, torticollis, autism, musculoskeletal conditions, and genetic disorders. The program provides several services in order to rehabilitate these conditions; they include physical, occupational, and speech therapy, in addition to audiolody services, all of which are performed by licensed therapists.
Summary of Internship
While interning at the Pediatric Physical Therapy department, I have the opportunity to receive more than just knowledge about pediatric rehabilitation; I also learn how to manage my social skills, how to make the best of routine tasks, and how to approach independence. Besides contributing to the tidiness of both the adult and pediatric sectors of the rehabilitation department, I also have opportunity of "sitting in" and observing treatment sessions. This is one of the most exciting parts of my internship day because, not only do I have access to a greater insight of the effects of a physical disorder, but also because I develop a closer relationship with my "patients" by watching them improve physically and emotionally over time. My mentors, Frances, Jen, and Raquel, also make a habit of explaining each patientís physical disorder and how a particular exercise helps reverse and/or ease its symptoms. My internship provides a genuine portrayal of doctor-patient relationships and the challenges that come with working with pediatric patients. Thus far, I am very thankful for interning at the Pediatric Rehabilitation department, and I hope to further my learning experience there.
