Background Information

Larry Katz and Herb Wolfe founded Zenith Dental in 1983, which is now known as DMG America. It is located in Englewood, New Jersey. The initial business focus was on the sales and distribution of quality private-label products. Mr. Katz foresaw the growing industry interest in esthetic dentistry and turned the company’s attention to high-end restorative materials. DMG America is the visionary company behind some of dentistry’s best known restorative products, and has become known as the “Automix Specialists.” Its leading role in Automix products began over a decade ago with the release of Luxatemp®, the first automix provisional restorative material. Clinician involvement has not only led to many innovative products, but has also resulted in the development of cutting-edge dental techniques and unique applications for these materials.

Summary of Internship

As an intern at DMG America, I was able to explore the world of dentistry from a Marketing point of view. During my internship, I attended one of the many dental trade shows that are held nationwide. Attending a dental show there are manufacturers presenting items that you would find in the dental office. Even financial institutions participate in hopes of working with business owners. I was also able to launch a product into market and learn all that is entailed to do so. The main thing you need to research when launching a new product is the competition. My mentors showed me how to build a database of customers and how to use this information to market new products by sending our literature, samples and free goods. Lastly, in order to be able to market in the dental field, you must first learn about dentistry. I was given the task of creating various dental educational modules that gave me the opportunity to first learn about the industry and different specialties, and then about the products my company manufactures. I presented my information to the marketing and education departments. As such, the education department will use my modules in future training courses for new representatives. Through this experience I have gained knowledge on how to market products and this information will be valuable because I hope to pursue this as my career in the future.
