Summary of Internship
My role as a High School intern had been quite limited amidst the busy schedules of the doctors and secretaries. Nevertheless, I had been given numerous duties, such as taking notes and learning about the different pediatric eye disorders. I was also required to “shadow” the doctor by observing his typical consultation sessions with the patient and his or her respective parents. I learned the types of questions asked in order to figure out the diagnosis. I also learned techniques that allow the doctors to have easier access to the eye, such as dilating the pupils through eye drops, and attracting the attention of many toddlers that do not cooperate well with the struggling doctors. Overall, my internship was indeed limited; however, it did serve as a memorable and valuable experience and ultimately gave me glimpse of the ophthalmology career field.
