Company/Organization: American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
Topic of Internship
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU) is a non-profit organization in Newark that works to protect liberty within the state of New Jersey. The ACLU specifically focuses on defending constitutional rights by involving itself in litigation and advocacy on behalf of individuals across New Jersey and even lobbying several bills in the state legislature. The ACLU of New Jersey is an affiliate of the national ACLU, which has also fought to protect civil liberties in the United States since its founding in 1920. This organization has stood out by protecting civil liberties before the United States Supreme Court more often than anyone else, expect for the government itself.
Summary of Internship
As an intake intern at the ACLU, I have several responsibilities and tasks, which include stuffing envelopes with membership information, sending out the mail, returning mail that is sent to the ACLU among an array of other responsibilities that arise throughout the day. The main task that I must fulfill involves processing intake letters and emails that people send to the ACLU. These letters often ask the ACLU for legal representation. My job as an intern is to read, summarize, enter the request into the ACLU database, find the correct code to classify the complaint, and then draft a response. The ACLU always writes a response letter to everyone who has written to them. A majority of the intake I receive do not involve civil liberties issues, meaning that the ACLU cannot represent them. Nonetheless, my role as an intern is vital to the ACLU because my work allows the ACLU to effectively find cases that involve a direct infraction on civil liberties so that they can continue the fight to protect these rights.
