Background Information

N.E.W. Christian Academy is a private Christian preschool founded by three sisters in 1997. Since then, it has nurtured and educated many children between the ages of two and six. The two most important missions of this school are to aid children in finding their identity in Christianity and to help mostly second generation Korean immigrants transition easily into public schools. In order to fulfill the first vision, worship is held every Friday and the students are taught to pray before every meal. To help students transition from speaking only Korean at home to having to speak only English in public schools, four year old classrooms each have one Korean and one American teacher, while the Kindergarten classroom only has one American teacher.

Summary of Internship

At N.E.W. Christian Academy, I was given the privilege of interning within multiple classes. I had the chance to learn different teaching techniques from three year old, four year old, and Kindergarten classes. Though I was given different tasks in each classroom, in general, I helped teachers by playing with the children during playtime, quieting the children during work time, and reading books to the students. Through this internship, I was able to learn the basic knowledge capacity of children at each age. I stayed in each classroom for about two months, so I was able to avoid the mundane, routine internship experience, but I also had to adjust to the feeling of starting a new internship every time I moved to another classroom. Because I switched classes after short periods of time, I not only learned about teaching and education but also about the importance of communication skills.
