Background Information

Holy Name Medical Center is a non- profit organization that was founded in 1925 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace. There are many different treatments with over 850 physicians and 33 medical specialties including cancer care, cardiovascular services, interventional radiology, dialysis treatment, women’s health care, neurological services, state of the art diagnostic treatments, health management services, and more. Holy Name Medical Center provides high quality health care to aid the recovery of all patients. For example, it was the first hospital in New Jersey and the third in the world to use respiratory gating technology to treat lung cancer. . This hospital has been affiliated with the New York-Presbyterian Health System since 1997, which has benefitted it greatly. It sponsored an upgraded nursery, increased access to clinical trials programs, and more educational opportunities for the physicians. The success of Holy Name Medical Center can be seen by just the amount of patients that are treated here each year: 26,000 inpatients, 44,000 Emergency Department patients and 18,000 outpatient clinic and ambulatory surgery patients.

Summary of Internship

As an intern at Holy Name Medical Center, I work from 8:00 to 3:00 on Thursdays. During the first week of my internship, I learned about the hospital and became familiar with it by working in the Courtesy room. This is basically where many of the volunteer works completing many different tasks. After the first week, I have been interning in the Physical Therapy Department. Here I am able to help the physical therapists get ready to treat patients by prepping beds, making ice packs and heating packs for the patients, and more. I also do some filing and complete various other tasks. This internship is beneficial because as a person who wishes to pursue this field in the future, I am able to observe the physical therapists at work and see how they treat different patients.
