Englewood Hospital & Medical Center has been around since 1890. It is known for its patient care and its bloodless surgery program. Reputable among the medical community is its cardiac surgery department and its ability to perform surgeries without transfusing.

Summary of Internship

At Englewood Hospital, I alternate between participating in research in the Anesthesiology Department and shadowing numerous medical professionals in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department. When in research, I continually update a computer database with patient data. Though monotonous, the task must be performed meticulously as one mistake can skew the research findings. This database serves the purpose of not only keeping patient data in a more secure place, but also allowing for an easy way to analyze the data. Eventually, when enough data is gathered, the research will be analyzed, organized and hopefully published. This research will hopefully prove that transfusions are unnecessary and a bloodless surgery program, similar to what Englewood Hospital participates in, is sufficient. Being a part of something that could change the way hospitals operate is truly amazing. I get to see this research in action when I intern in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department. Here, I observe the daily routine of cardiac surgeons and their physician assistants. The most interesting part of this is being in the operating room and actually seeing cardiac surgery. From mitral valve replacements to bypass surgeries, everything I see in the OR is absolutely amazing. There is no better feeling than actually seeing a beating heart mere inches away from you. If anything, through my alternating internship at Englewood Hospital, I have been able to learn what medicine is all about and that it is nothing short of incredible.
