Company/Organization: Seeds of Peace
Mentor(s):Jennifer Lishansky and Fayth Centeno
Topic of Internship
Founded in 1993 by journalist John Wallach, Seeds of Peace is dedicated to empowering young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence. Over the last 19 years, Seeds of Peace has intensified its impact, dramatically increasing the number of participants, represented nations and programs. From 46 Israeli, Palestinian and Egyptian teenagers in 1993, the organization has expanded its programming to include young leaders from South Asia, Cyprus and the Balkans. Its leadership network now encompasses over 4,300 young people. Currently, the organization is actively working in the Middle East and South Asia. Seeds of Peace’s internationally-recognized program begins at its summer Camp in Maine and continues through year-round regional initiatives. These include ongoing dialogue meetings, conferences, workshops, educational and professional opportunities, and an adult educators program. This sustained engagement allows participants to develop lasting empathy, respect, and confidence, and equips them with the communication and negotiation skills necessary to advance peace.
Summary of Internship
At Seeds of Peace, I have been given the opportunity to attain a good understanding on how a non-profit organization functions. One of the things I learned is that there is more than one aspect to these organizations. During my time there, I help the Human Resources department on making sure each employees’ file is complete, research travel policies or anything else that my mentor might need. Interning in the development department, I was able to assist Jennifer Lishansky in planning events the organization held, like the George Mitchell conference, Stand Up for Peace, and the annual Peace Market event. Although internships are advantageous because of the office skills you are able to acquire, other factors come into play like the people you are able to meet. The environment at my internship is one of determination and hope, the goal they are trying to achieve is not a simple one, but with enough work and dedication it can be accomplished. Not only have I learned the importance of good work ethic, but the significance of business relationships.
