Topic of Internship
Frederick Douglass Academy, formally known as I.S. 10, is a co-educational public middle and high school in West Harlem, New York City. The grades taught there are 6-12. The school was created in 1991 by Dr. Patricia Black, superintendent of High Schools at the time, Dr. Bertram Brown, Community School District 5 Superintendent, and Dr. Lorraine Monroe, former Deputy Chancellor of Instruction. It was created as a need to enforce better education in the inner city area. Mr. Joseph Gates is the current principal at this school.
Summary of Internship
At F.D.A, I intern with a sixth grade English teacher. My tasks now range from doing teacher duties such as grading homework and tests, attendance, walking around the classroom to help the students, and administer tests. Since we are only half way through the internship, I have not taught yet it but it will happen soon. I will be able to make a lesson plan up and then teach it. Whenever my mentor asks for help and even when she doesn’t, I assist in every way I can. My main goal is to teach in high school but this internship is giving me valuable lessons. I am learning how to treat the students, how to respond to them when they misbehave, and more patience. The environment of the schools to me is a beautiful one. The gift of being able to teach is not one every person is blessed with but when you are, it should be your duty to use that gift. I know I will walk away from this internship with valuable information and skills.
