Company/Organization: Holy Name Medical Center
Topic of Internship
Holy Name Medical Center is located in Teaneck, NJ. The hospital has been providing care to its community for over eighty five years. It was founded and sponsored in 1925 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. Holy Name developed from a small hospital with only two surgeons and the leadership of a Catholic sister into an acute medical center. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace purchased an estate of the late William Walter Phelps and appointed Sisters to work in the small, 115 hospital beds. Only five years later a clinic added to meet the needs of the community during the Great Depression. As the demand for more space in the hospital increased over the years, Holy Name expanded. From the very beginning, Holy Nameís mission was to serve the community, heal and treat its patients. Not surprisingly, the hospitalís mission remains the same.
Summary of Internship
Over time, medicine has become and active player in everyday life. The type of medication can create both life-saving and lethal results. The job of a hospital pharmacist is to check the medication prescribed by the Physicians and send the medication to their appropriate location. Therefore utmost accuracy, speed and caution must be used when conducting responsibilities in the Pharmacy Department at Holy Name Medical Center. Interning at such an intense hospital pharmacy setting helps to teach one how to become a member of the family and to jump right in to the frantic days at the pharmacy. I have had the chance to work with multiple pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to learn about how the pharmacy functions and the diverse roles within it. The hospital pharmacy provides the intern an opportunity for hands-on learning. Instead of simply shadowing the pharmacists, interns are given the opportunity to interact with the medication. For those who are pursuing exposure in the pharmaceutical field, a career in pharmacy or pharmacy technician, an internship at Holy Name Medical Centerís Pharmacy is an excellent start.
