Company/Organization: Shelter Our Sisters
Topic of Internship
Shelter Our Sisters is a nonprofit organization that was created in 1976. Its main goal is to assist women and children who are victims of domestic violence. The shelter is home to many women and children, and also provides counseling and educated services in areas of financial, language, or job experience to say the least. They work with many volunteers and the community to provide some of these services. The shelter is open twenty four hours and seven days per week. Shelter Our Sisters helps educate the community about domestic violence and provides a safe environment for women who have been victims of domestic violence.
Summary of Internship
I completed a forty hour training that helped educate me and allows me to serve as a volunteer at Shelter Our Sisters. The training really helped me understand the cycle of domestic violence and informed me of ways to help women. The beginning of my day sometimes consisted of helping in the playroom with the preschool program which operates daily from 9am to 12noon. I grew great connections with some of the children, and that was a wonderful experience. During the December holiday season, I helped the volunteer coordinator and assisted her in preparing for the volunteer gift-wrapping fundraiser. We used over 100 volunteers to gift wrap at various locations around Bergen County and raised over $15,000 for shelter programs. Sometimes I did basic office work like filing and organizing. One of the most significant things I did there was to answer a hotline call for a woman who wanted to escape a domestic violence relationship and enter the shelter. This whole internship experience has giving me great insight to the field of counseling and social work. I enjoyed interning here.
