Summary of Internship
My internship in the Breast Surgical Services department consists of secretarial work and observing surgeries. My main task is making 30 to 40 confirmation calls to the patients for the following week. Once I make all of those calls, I pull out the patient files and organize them. It is a simple task, but is still very time consuming especially when they is a long list of patients to call. Answering the phone is also an important task because people are constantly calling the department. Occasionally, I will make new patient folders and consent packets for Dr. McIntosh and Dr. Goldman. For the moment, my internship is simple and has showed me the challenges of making sure everything runs smoothly in the department. Starting the week of March 28, I began observing various surgical procedures done by Dr. McIntosh in the operating room. Entering the OR is an amazing experience and showcases the very real and difficult tasks of being a surgeon.
