Background Information

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a non-profit organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. There are two basic branches to JDRF: fundraising and the Outreach Program. The fundraising branch focuses on raising money for T1D research through fundraising events such as the JDRF Walk to Cure for Diabetes and the JDRF Dream Gala. The Outreach Program focuses on helping improve the lives of people with T1D and aiding people in dealing with living a full life with T1D through informational toolkits and support groups.

Summary of Internship

Although Kristen Hepsen was my main mentor, I consider everyone in the office to be my mentor. The office was generally small, about 5 people, which enabled me to have different things to do from week to week. Some weekly tasks included mailings and sending out memorial/celebration donations. However I have also had other tasks and projects. I have helped with support groups and helped with events such as the diabetes walk. I have also been given individual projects, including a project to spruce up the website. I have been able to see the business side of JDRF while also being able to work with the fundraising and Outreach program. This was an amazing opportunity to not only help people, but also to get insight into the workplace.
