Company/Organization: Office of State Senator Paul Sarlo
Topic of Internship
Senator Paul Sarlo is the state senator representing the 36th Legislative district in the New Jersey Senate. His office, since his appointment in 2003, has helped the constituents of the district, which are the residents of Carlstadt, Cliffside Park, East Rutherford, Little Ferry, Lyndhurst, Moonachie, North Arlington, Passaic, Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park, Rutherford, South Hackensack, Teterboro, Wallington, and Wood-Ridge with government-related issues. Some of these issues include assistance with senior services, assistant with unemployment insurance, providing information about state legislation, and by processing notary applications for district residents. The office also takes note of constituents' beliefs on government and relays them to the Senator. In addition, the office aids the Senator in drafting legislation, doing legal research, and meeting with constituents.
Summary of Internship
My experience at the office has been very rewarding. Through my internship, I have learned the day-to-day activities that government employees have to do and the role that local government plays in society. Though my experience contains many of the basic elements of any office internship, such as scanning and filing documents, I have done several key projects. One of these projects is helping process notary applications, and transferring all of the application information from the previous year onto a spreadsheet. Another project I have done is writing awards for notable high school athletes in the 36th district. I have also done research on Senator Sarlo in local newspapers to see his portrayal by the media. This experience has helped me understand what state government does and has encouraged me into studying politics and government.
