Summary of Internship

Interning at the Valley Hospital was an enriching and rewarding experience. When I was given the opportunity to choose which department I wanted to intern with, I chose the Emergency Department, which has many different pods such as Minor Treatment, Pediatrics, and the main Emergency Room. Every Thursday, I shadowed one of the four doctors on call. Having the opportunity to follow a doctor allowed me to see a real work environment and see all the parts of a well-functioning department. I observed the patient/doctor interaction and I learned how to begin diagnosing and dealing with all kinds of patients. Being in a department that always has new patients arriving, I had my fair share of interesting events to witness and take part in, like a patient who attempted suicide, patient being reverted, or assisting in a thoracentesis. Some days were slow while other days were hectic, but there was always something new to learn, even if it was not about medicine. Doctors such as Dr. Becker, Dr. Propersi, and Dr. Tsomos, were very influential. At Valley, they are not only great doctors, but great teachers, as well, which allowed me to have a great internship.
