Company/Organization: Internal Medicine PA
Mentor(s):Dr. Shahid Umer & Emanuella Ventura
Topic of Internship
Internal Medicine is a doctor/medical office for patients over the age of 18. It is located in Teaneck, New Jersey and its business has been rising slowly as the number of patients has been increasing each year. This company was started by Doctor Jack Berdy in 1996, which at that point he hired my mentor, Dr. Umer. My mentorís wife Dr. Sarwat Waseem was hired soon after and together, they slowly began to take over the company from Dr. Berdy. The company started off slow at first, but soon began to get many patients as the years went on. Now the office gets about 30 patients a day and the employees are really passionate about what they do, and it shows in their work every day.
Summary of Internship
Every Thursday, I have the unique opportunity of gaining great experience from a real doctor/medical office. Instead of just a customary classroom type learning, I actually have the chance to do a little more hands on work. I do not have a traditional routine that I follow, but every Thursday morning I come in and wait for either courtesy desk worker Yolanda or medical assistant Emanuella to assign me a task to accomplish. Some works that are given to me to complete are: to call all the patience scheduled to come in the next day and confirm their appointments. File charts in the basement or bring up charts of patients that are needed. Sometimes they will ask me to use the computer and check if a list of patients have had their annual Medicare physical check-up. If not, then those patients are to be called and asked to make an appointment to come in as soon as possible. During my time as an intern I have learned the importance of medicine, how to care for patients, and difficult it is to be a doctor. This is really an extraordinarily amazing experience for me and one that I am truly grateful for having.
