Background Information

The North Bergen Police Department is located in North Bergen, New Jersey. This police department is the working place for 120 men and women whose sole purpose is to provide a safe environment for the people of North Bergen. The North Bergen P.D has one of the most dedicated employees around, as the department sets a standard and a goal for all the employees to follow, which is: “The dedicated men and women of the North Bergen Police Department work tirelessly in an effort to reduce crime in our township and are encouraged to cultivate a partnership with the community we serve.” This police department is able to succeed because of the connection that it has made with the people they are trying to protect. This connection makes it easier for the police officers to work more efficiently and it also helps the people to gain a piece of mind. Employees in this department are extremely happy to be a part of it and it is noticeable week in and week out.

Summary of Internship

Each week, I have an opportunity of learning the business part of a police department and learning early on what it is like to be a police officer. Every morning, I report to the Chiefs Office and begin to check if there are any papers to be filed. After I have finished filing the papers, I will receive a job or an activity from either Lt. Faranda or Sgt. Guzman. These jobs/activities vary between going on patrol with a police officer, going down to the court, or going to other various places. I, personally, find all of these jobs to be fun and interesting because they each teach you something different about the profession. It did not take that long to make friends because everyone in the department is nice and are eager to share their experiences and teach you something about the profession that they have been doing for years. During my time at the police department, I learned a lot of things: the importance of communication, how to use various tools specific to this profession, and the importance of having a passion for the profession. This experience has helped me paint a clear picture of what it is like to be a police officer, and that is what this program is all about. I loved every second of everyday in this department and I would not trade it for the world. This was an amazing learning experience and I am very thankful that I was given the opportunity to be an intern at the North Bergen Police Department.
