Summary of Internship

Every Thursday, there is a unique opportunity every senior at the Academies At Englewood has. Instead of going to our normal classrooms in a regular school day we go to an internship for the day. As an intern at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, I come in at 9 am and go downstairs to the volunteer office to sign in. I later go upstairs to the 5th floor which happens to be where the mother baby unit is. I check in with the secretary, Evelyn, to see what she has for me to do that morning. Making packets, filing, or delivering water pitchers is what I do for the first half of my day. On the second half of the day, I follow around different nurses or go inside the nursery to observe the admissions. The nurses happen to pay very close attention to their patients which is something I love them most. As the year goes by, the nurses see that I am improving and have paid less attention to me and they trust me with the tasks given. My time as an intern really impacted my learning experience and helped me reassure that nursing is the major I want pursue in college. I learned various things ranging from the importance of keeping the medical records organized, having all the papers needed in the packets and keeping the patients updated on the admissions log. The most incredible thing I have learned is the work environment that I am in has a genuine feel from all the rest. I feel like I was the missing piece to the puzzle. As I started to become more familiar with my surroundings, I got the courage to build relationships with some of my fellow coworkers. This experience is an incredible experience that has taught me a lot and I am truly grateful to be a part of the Englewood Hospital team.
