Summary of Internship
Having the opportunity to engage in an internship at MSKCC, I have been able to experience first hand the role of medical research. Every Thursday morning, I walk into MSKCC and find myself in the company of medical students, surgical residents and physicians who have dedicated their career to combining the clinical world with the laboratory. My tenure in the lab has been spent observing various techniques, learning their principles and also having the opportunity to conduct some of these experiments. Some of the techniques that I have observed and have taken a part in include PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), mouse dissections and IHC (immunohistochemistry) experiments. I have gained insight into the scientific thought process, which include the proposition of a question, the development of a plan and the execution of that plan. Above all I have come to see the very importance that laboratory research plays in the advancement of clinical care.
