Summary of Internship

I have volunteered at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital for about 6 months and it was very different from what I expected out of a hospital. Rather than observing doctors like most volunteers, I was able to experience the internal mechanics of a hospital through my time at Bronx-Lebanon. My main focus of learning was on the meaningful use of patient portals. A patient portal allows patients to access their electronic health record online and provides them with numerous resources and useful information. It also serves as an aid for the hospital staffs by managing outside the hospital activities so that physicians can focus more on in-hospital activities. My job was to go around the outpatient clinics and use a tablet PC to help patients sign up for Bronx Lebanonís patient portal called myBronxCare. I helped my mentor conduct research and develop a survey that can be used to gauge patientsí needs and interests and help Bronx Lebanon optimize its use. Overall, the most important lesson taken was that it is not only doctors who take part in creating successful care at a hospital. It takes a whole unison of all the hospital staffs in order to provide excellent care for patients, which makes running a hospital correctly such a difficult task.
