Summary of Internship

Every Thursday instead of going to school, seniors at the Academies @ Englewood have the opportunity to go to their internship. As an Intern at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, I start my day off by signing in at the volunteer office at 9AM. Then, I go to the 2nd floor where I get buzzed into the surgeon changing room. I change into my scrubs and place my bag into a small office next to the nurse’s desk. I make my way into either surgery room 5 or 6 and greet the surgical tech, nurses, and surgeons that are in the room. I stand at the head of the surgery table or the side and I observe the neurosurgical procedures that occur each week. In my internship I watch surgeries that range from craniotomies to lumbar decompressions. My time here has really shown me the difficulties that a surgeon faces such as continually standing on hours end. I was fortunate enough to watch surgeries from its beginning to its end and I was able to see the behind the scenes of an operation room. It was amazing to get an early look at a career in surgery .
