Background Information

The Superior Court of New Jersey, presiding over the Bergen County area, has the highest jurisdiction in the county. The Superior Court of Bergen County is located in the Bergen County Justice Center in Hackensack, New Jersey. This court deals with different cases, and is divided into different divisions, such as, civil, criminal, family, and municipal. The cases heard range from simple disputes that are resolved within minutes to trials that can last for months. The building is properly secured by Sheriff’s officers because of what goes on inside the building. The building also contains holding cells for prisoners and juvenile delinquents who come to court when their case is heard before the judge.

Summary of Internship

As an intern at the Superior Court, my duties vary and range depending on the influx of people present at the court on that particular day. Most of my time is spent retrieving files that need to be reviewed by the Judge’s team. I have also helped to cover the front desk as a first responder for the people who come in to receive paperwork or documentation for their cases. In addition to this, I have had the opportunity to help Judge’s first hand by making copies of orders for the different parties who are having their cases heard in court. As a result of this responsibility, I am able to listen to numerous court cases because I usually help when there are multiple cases on the Judge’s calendar. These cases are usually the final judgment on a final restraining order, usually because of an act of Domestic Violence. When my work is finished for the day, I am able to watch court cases if there are any on the bench. The cases I have heard range from Domestic Violence, Child Custody, Juvenile, Divorce, and much more. This internship is a great experience for students to receive first-hand experience, in the law field.
