Company/Organization: Englewood Municipal Court
Topic of Internship
From the year 1675 up until the year of 1683, Bergen County was considered to be one large judicial district. This changed when the Provincial Assembly passed an act that separated Bergen County as a whole and turned it into several counties, such as Essex County, Middlesex County, Bergen County and Monmouth County. Soon after, a Superior Court was established in Hackensack in which all major cases or those that were out of the Municipal Court's jurisdictions would be handled. After, local municipal courts were established in every town to deal with their own local cases. The N.J.S.A 2A: 8-1 gave and continues to give every Municipal Court all of their powers, duties, and jurisdictions. The Englewood Municipal Court holds jurisdiction over all traffic, disorderly contact, and City ordinance violations.
Summary of Internship
At the Englewood Municipal Court, I have been lucky enough to experience sitting trough various types of cases that vary from something as small as a minor traffic ticket all the way up to sitting through something as big as a DUI/DWI and different Criminal cases. Having been able to sit through various types of cases gave me huge insight on how the court is ran and how every different type of case is handled, allowing me to acquire a different perspective on things. When court was in session, I was allowed to watch each individual case as well as occasionally help move papers back and forth. On less busy days, instead of going to the court, I would be given office work to do. The office work usually consisted of matching tickets, filing papers and shredding documents that were no longer needed. While working in the office, it is extremely interesting to learn how everything is done. The systems used to match the tickets as well as how they are filed depending on the type of case are extremely interesting. Overall, this internship at the Englewood Municipal Court has been a great experience that allowed me to improve my work ethic that is something that will help me through out my entire life.
