Company/Organization: The Shen Lab of Computational Genomics
Topic of Internship
The Shen Lab is located in the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, an interdepartmental center within the Columbia University Department of Systems Biology. Studying human biology and diseases through quantitative approaches, the Shen Lab is interested in the dynamics of immune systems as well as the genetics of cancer and developmental diseases. Four specific areas of interest are genome sequencing and assembly, genetic mapping of disease genes, autoimmunity and the major histocompatibility complex, and pharmacogenomics.
Summary of Internship
I work under Dr. Yufeng Shen, the principal investigator, and was also guided by Boris Grinshpun, a graduate student in the lab. I work remotely since lab space is limited, but Dr. Shen and Boris have been immensely generous with their time, always patiently assisting me when asked. Through my internship, I advanced my knowledge of several programming languages, including Perl, Python, and R in addition to gaining a better understanding of biostatistics. Though I still have much to learn, my internship has definitely been a positive experience and I look forward to bringing my experiences with me to college and beyond.
