Background Information

Oradell Animal Hospital is an award- winning animal hospital where domestic pets and exotic pets go for evaluations, surgery and therapy. It was established in 1961 by Drs. Gary Johnson and Anthony Palminteri. Oradell has started as a small hospital in Oradell, NJ, but, the hospital had burned down in a fire. The hospital was rebuilt and now has several locations such as Paramus (the main location), Fort Lee and Hasbrouck Heights. The hospital is staffed with veterinary technicians, veterinarians, client service representatives and other members to help keep the hospital running 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Their goals are to provide the best quality care to the animals they receive and support their clients with understanding and sensitivity.

Summary of Internship

Being at Oradell Animal Hospital has made me feel very comfortable with the profession I want to major in at college. As an extern, I learned about the different specialities the hospital had to offer. Some of the specialities I had no idea they existed until I came here. I am very privileged to observe the work that goes on in the hospital: surgeries, rehabilitation sessions, acupuncture, and basic medicinal care. My first thoughts were that animals come and go with the blink of an eye. But, my accusations were wrong. The hospital cares for animals until the veterinarians of the patients feel as though the animals are stable and seem to be making progress. The specialized vets help care for the different attributes of the animal such as dermatology, dentistry, neurology, cardiology, acupuncture/ rehab, orthopedics and radiology. I have examined and observed surgeries on mostly cats and dogs. While observing, I would ask questions and take notes about the procedure of prepping an animal for surgery, prepping yourself for surgery and what is being done in the surgery. I would also do the same for basic care. It was a pleasure to be at the hospital and understand what each department does, why it is important and how the hospital falls all into place. It has given me experience in how a major animal hospital runs and what is expected by the clients who come here to get the best care for their pet.
